Six BBCC Golfers Win President’s By Bill Edsel Trophies were the hit of the show at the President’s Cup Golf Tournament awards dinner July 30 at Bogue Banks Country Club. Sponsored by the Men’s Golf Association (MGA), the tournament featured match play throughout July in six flights handicapped by skill level. Eighteen hole golfers competed in four flights, nine holers in two flights, with the championship matches played July 30. The Edsels for the 18 hole flights were won by Jess Randall, Rex Edwards, Bob Gallo and Bob Danehy. Taking home Edsels in the nine hole competitions were Bob Murphy and Bill White. The Edsels were not named for the famous automotive flop, but for MGA Vice President Edsel Davis, who suggested to MGA President Rich Bingmann that there be a President’s Cup Tournament. To acknowledge the suggestion, Bingmann wanted to call the tournament The Davis Cup. But Davis demurred, pointing out that confused participants would probably show up with tennis rackets instead of golf clubs. Cup Edsels White Voila! The Edsels were bom.The trophies Bingmann devised were true to the Edsel tradition: something not too many people wanted to take home. Put together from discarded scraps of wood, rusty nails and bolts, and spare parts from old Robert Hal I plain pipe racks (perhaps a northeastern reference), the trophies were immediately regarded by the spouses of the winners as items that would not be welcome in their living rooms. But cooler heads prevailed, and someone with a really bright idea suggested that Edsel himself autograph the trophies to validate them. That did it. At last report, one winner felt that an Edsel with a genuine Edsel autograph could be bid up to at least $1000 on Ebay Which should have been a happy ending. But there is a discordant note. Rumor has it that Murphy and White, having been awarded Half Edsels because they only played half as many holes, are considering filing a discrimination suit since their Half Edsels may only be worth half as much on Ebay. Women’s Club to Open Season on Musical Note Bill Murill, who makes and plays woodwind instruments, will be guest speaker at the Pine Knoll Shores Women’s Club meeting Friday, Sept. 23, at Town Hall.
